This was a prototype based on the Porsche tuned VW Sharan minivan. Production: 1988 Engine Type: Flat-6 Displacement: n/a Power: n/a Torque: n/a Weight: n/a Full Name: Varrera Production Type: Concept/Prototype Body Type: Minivan Car Seating: 7 The Porsche Varrera is a Porsche minivan. It is a high performance minivan with distinctive styling. For years it has been a prototype not scheduled for production, and most likely it will stay that way. As Porsche continues to try to be more aggressive in other markets, it will continue to produce prototypes like this one and the C-88 and will, for the first time ever, mass produce (under the Porsche name) a non-sports car. The name comes from combining the two ideas Porsche wanted to package together in this vehicle: Van and Carrera. It should be all the power and stability of the Carrera with all the cargo capacity of a (mini) van. Porsche started the Varrera project in the early 1960's (not recently, contrary to modern opinion) under the codename EA 266, but was then cancelled before even reaching prototype status. Yes, the project was started in the 1960's, and that can be explained by the Volkswagen-Porsche connection. Seen throughout Porsche's history, they have close ties with Volkswagen (the 356, 914, 924 and Cayenne SUV to name a few). Therefore, when Volkswagen produced their popular minivan in the 60's, Porsche was tempted to create a high-performance minivan based on the Volkswagen. However, this vision never materialized. |

The Porsche Panamericana This was a show car to Celebrate Ferry Porsche's 80th Birthday. It's body is made of fiberglass and carbin fiber. It is based on the Carrera 4 all -wheel drive chassis. Full Name: Panamericana Production Type: Concept/Prototype Body Type: Coupe Car Seating: 2 Production Run: 1989-1989 Produced In: Germany Introduced At: 1989 Frankfurt Automobile Show Outline of Number Made: 1 Engine Type: Naturally Aspirated, Air Cooled, Flat 6 Cylinder, SOHC 12 valves total, 2 valves per cylinder Bore: 100.0 mm 3.94 in Stroke: 76.4 mm 3.01 in Porsche AG wished to renew the design of its star and most famous model the immortal Porsche 911 , and for this purpose both the dutchman Harm Lagaay and Ulrich Betz were recruited as designer and technical director respectively.. Lagaay was already known for its work in Porsche's Weissach R&D center from 1970 to1977,he was member of the Anatole Lapine desing team ,who designed the Porsche 924 , lately he was hired by Ford to develop the design of their models Escort, Sierra & Scorpio . In 1985 he worked for BMW Technik developing the BMW Z1. The Porsche Panamericana was intended to be only a concept car and although Lagaay, hoped that his creation would be produced at least in small series in 1992 , the growing economic crisis probably put an end to his wishes . However the car had an influence in the development of the 1996-98 Porsche 911 Targa and Porsche Boxster . The Panamericana was shown at Frankfurt car exhibition, after a development period of only six months. It was build on the basis of the Porsche Carrera 4 , its bodywork was built with plastic and carbon fiber panels . An outstanding characteristic of the car were its wide wheel covers with the objective to have enough room for various sizes of rims and tires, so if necessary it could be transformed in an off-road car. The three part Speedline rims were made exclusively for this model. The roof line was homogeneously streamlined and sloped gently towards the rear engine deck. It could be covered with a waterproof fabric with a pink zipper. Various roof configurations were possible and the car was in fact an hybrid of a hard top, targa, convertible, coupe and off-road. Five cars in one! When viewed from the front its style has a resemblance with the Porsche 996 and Boxster . as expected, since Laagay also has designed the Boxster. In spite of its unstreamlined wheels, its aerodynamic drag coefficient was only 0,30. |

Porsche 989, Concept/Prototype Full Name: 989 Production Type: Concept/Prototype Body Type: Sedan Production Run: 1989-1989 Produced In: Germany Original Price: planned at $100,000 Outline of Number Made: planned at about 5000 units per year Engine Type: 80 degree, water cooled 3.6-liter V-8, weighing 419 pounds. A V6 and turbocharging was also planned Displacement: 4219 cc 258 cu. in. Power: 344 hp @ 7000 rpm 257 kW @ 7000 rpm Torque: 273 lb. ft. @ 4000 rpm 370 Nm @ 4000 rpm Horsepower per Liter: 81.5 hp/L Bore: 94.0 mm 3.7 in Stroke: 76.0 mm 2.99 in The 989 was intended to become first 4-door Porsche ever, having a true back seat. Plans were for it to be powered by a large 4.2 litre, all alloy, water cooled V8, and for it to be the successor to the 928. Not too far into the development, it was trashed, due to the extreme development costs and limited number of potential buyers. The control arm suspension, which was later featured on the 993, was developed for the 989. The most striking feature are the headlight and tailight clusters, which are exactly like the ones found on the later 911, the 996. Porsche had this 1998 styling developed all the way back in 1991! Even though the project was scrapped, it was not a total loss, as it eventually served as the predecessor for the 1998 evolution of the 911 nameplate. Try to imagine the side photo of the 989 with only one set of doors, and you'll see a striking resemblance to the 996. |

According to rumors, the Porsche 980 (internal code S1) carbon fiber body supercar was to be introduced at the Detroit Auto Show in 2001. Based on Porsche's next-generation Le Mans racecar its 700 horsepower 5.4 liter, twin-turbo mid-engine V8 (derived from the V8 developed for the new Cayenne SUV) should have propelled it to a top speed of 224 mph (360.5 km/h), making it the fastest production car in the world. Production was expected for 2003, with a price estimated at 750,000 DM (US $365,000). However, this rumoured car was just that -- a rumour. It is now believed the image was just a computer graphic designed by a car magazine that spread like wild fire through the automotive circles. It served well as a cover for the Carrera GT concept car, which has the same concept, but with a V10 producing 550 HP. So don't be expecting this car in your Porsche dealership -- ever. |

Full Name: 911 Full 4-Seater Production Type: Concept/Prototype Body Type: Coupe Car Seating: 4 Production Run: 1969-1969 Produced In: Germany Introduced At: Never shown. Original Price: Never sold. Number Made: 2 units Outline of Number Made: Only two protypes were ever produced, each slightly different. Taking a Porsche's appeal and stretching it? It wasn't the first time and it wouldn't be the last time. In the late 60's, Porsche as a company was undergoing important changes, while the model range itself was remaining rather static. The 356 was long gone, and save for the lower -market 912, the 911 was all alone: the company was living on the rather specialized offering of two person sports cars. There were some things resembling seats in the back, as attested by their shape and cloth covering. However, these attempts by Porsche fooled no one, and owners would at most place small children or, better yet, dogs, in the rear seats. Why not make the car more practical? The idea has been around for a long time. Porsche's roots were with the Beetle, the famous people-mover, and plenty of work had been done with expanding the size of that car. The 356 itself had four seat prototypes built in its era, and during the development of the 911, 911-like cars also featured larger, more accommodating rear. The progression to get a four seat 911 on the drawing board was natural. Two prototypes were built in 1969, which Porsche based on the design of the contemporary B-body 911. The wheelbase was extended about half a foot through the area between the rear edge of the door and the rear wheelhouse, precisely where the extra space would be needed for the rear passengers. As is common with such projects, each of the prototypes incorporated different styling. One's looks merely resembled that of the 911, a truly extended version of the sports car. The other car, had a tale that was more squarish, and also featured larger lights. Most notable is the rear-quarter windows, which some have remarked in a decidedly uncomplimentary fashion resembled those of an Opel Kadett coupe. Ultimately, neither was very attractive and they were not approved for production. One did end up sticking around the factory for a number of years, serving as development hack. However, this would not be the end of the effort to expand the Porsche 911 beyond the two seater configuration. In the late 70's, Porsche launched its 928, which it was quite convinced would take over from the 911 a true four seat evolution. That did not end up being as successful as envisioned, and the 911 still remains, seating configuration unmolested. In the early 90's, Porsche yet again added more seats to a 911 prototype, the four door 989 saloon, which did not enter production either due to cost concerns. Its looks did carry over to the then future-generation 911, the 996. Nevertheless, it seems we will, over the coming years, definitely see the 911 grow to sport four seats. Building on the success of their Cayenne SUV, Porsche has confirmed that it will produce a four seater model, which will obviously take styling cues from the venerable 911. |

The Porsche Murene Another special made its debut at the 1970 Paris Salon. This effort was presented by the Louis Heuliez concern of Cerlzay in France, and was the work of Jaques Cooper, a freelance designer of some repute. Heuliez was well known for its commercial vehicle bodies and coachbuilding activities, so it came as no surprise to find that this was a very professional proposal. Cooper's design was translated into a full-scale model, and from that it took less than three months to builds a running prototype based on the 914/6. Known as the Murene, the mid-engined cuope retained much of the original interior. However, the two tone coachwork was a complete departure from the 914 series; the bumpers were removed to accentuate the smooth lines and, at the rear, there was a separate uggage compartment with its own lockable lid, and a one-piece tail section that could be moved upward and back to give easy access to the engine bay. The Murene would never go into production, mainly because it arrived to late as the 914's replacement was already being sketched out, and there was no room for a mid engined car in the proposed new range. |
