New introduction (and a Q about ceramic paint protection)

28 apr 2018 20:05

Hi everyone,

First off, to get the obvious out of the way, I don't speak Dutch very well (and I write it even worse), so I hope you won't hate me for sticking to English. I'm American, but have been living in Amsterdam for a little over a year.

Second, thanks to all the folks that post regularly here. I've been reading the forum posts for some time, as I've been in the search for a Porsche, and they are incredibly helpful.

I had originally wanted a 964 or 993, but as prices for those have gone through the roof, I decided to look for a 997. Last week I took delivery of my 997.1 in black with terra cotta interior. It's a manual (which was a must for me) and nicely equipped, with only 43K KM. I'm excited to finally own a 911, having dreamed of one since I was a kid.

Now, for the question. Because I live in Amsterdam, my car unfortunately is parked outside. I have nice street parking (I can park in places where I don't have to worry about other cars too much), but I can't easily protect the car from pollen, bird droppings, etc. As a result, I'm considering getting a paint coating from CeramicPro or similar. Does anyone have experience with it or another nano-protector? They are saying it's $1500 Euro plus the cost of polishing, which sounds really expensive to me, but if it works well, could be worth it. Does anyone know a good place to get this done near Amsterdam? (Or if not, do you know a good place that does detailing, as they often do these kinds of treatments).

I also am potentially considering doing a 3M wrap of the vehicle instead. If anyone has experience with that and recommendations, I'd appreciate it. Looks like that's around $2500 Euro +/-.

Thanks,
David

Welcome to the forum David. I just got my car coated with N-XTC ceramic (glass) coating last week at custom car cleaning http://www.customcarcleaning.nl Prices start anywhere within the range of 1.000 - 1.500 EUR depending on the size of the car and more important the level of paint correction detailing necessary. So first of all you should (let a detailing specialist) assess the state of your cars paintwork. Assuming it’s in a good enough state, otherwise there is less benefit in coating it. My guy (Bart) is not a big fan of protective xpel/foil wraps. Another thing to consider, there is nothing that will protect the car 100%. But the reason I went for the ceramic glass coating is that it gives good protection of the (new) paint and I should be able to keep the car clean more easily. I can imagine that’s also what you’re looking for.

Welcome! As indicated above, everything depends on the state of the paint. I just had my car done with the guys of Detail Koning Auto Studio in Hoofddorp (so nearby), including a glasscoating on my paint, wheels, brake calipers and exhaust tips. Depending on the state of your paint and the period you want the glasscoating to last, their prices range from approx. 700 to way over 700  .

If you have time on Sunday the 24th, we are organising a detailing day with them and you can also have your car used as demo for the glascoating if you want (to see what would be possible). See for more info under meetings (or PB me if you want more info).

Sorry for breaking in the post, but why not foil wrap for protection?

Ik zie Davids auto net op Facebook voorbij komen, bij Carlo van Krey. Misschien kan hij zelf nog wat foto’s posten.

Thanks for the replies! The paint is in very good condition. The only flaws I've noticed are up front where it has some nicks and scratches from typical road debris after being driven for 43K KM.

@Mark996, appreciate the heads-up on the event. That definitely sounds of interest. I'll check out the details to see if I can make it on the 24th. Did you research the Mayvinci coating they use vs others on the market? My understanding is the quality of the work is generally more important than the type of coating they use, so maybe not too important as long as you know they're good detailers.

@MarkS, didn't realize I was on the FB page! Too funny. Happy to post some pictures, but I am embarrassed to admit I can't figure out how :)

I did some research indeed, and besides that Mayvinci showed very good results, my main trigger was the quality/enthusiasm and passion of the guys working at Detail Koning. So you're understanding is correct, I think you need a company which is really passionate about applying coatings and doing all the prep work. If I look at what they did on my car (so prep work for full car and applying coating on paint, brake calipers and exhaust tips), they really took the time for everything (prep work was extensive). Re the coating, you can choose for the period you want the coating to last (if the car remains outside, I would go for the longest period possible, so 5-8 years).

Thanks! I'm emailing with Patrick to find out a bit more. Saw your Cayenne in their promo video. Looks great!

I got the same type of coating done as Mark S. (N-XTC glascoating) via my Porsche dealer.
I was advised that the best way to keep the protection working optimally is to renew the top layer once a year.
This is not layer that is most hydrophobic, but it also slowly deteriorates with washing.
The harder underlay does not however, but this is less hydrophobic as I have been led to believe.
I have been quoted prices in the €300,- to 350,- to do this.
However this does include a complete worker and new top layer of the car including wheels, brake calipers and windows.
