Porsche's New 'Tunnel Mode' Patent Is Seriously Silly in the Best Way
Everyone loves blasting through a tunnel in a sports car. Porsche clearly REALLY loves it.

There's something uniquely special about a tunnel run in a sports car. The remnants of combusted fuel bounce off the concrete-walled tubes, adding the sweetest resonance to your chosen metallic song. And it seems the people at Porsche are so keen on these brief moments of automotive enjoyment, they’ve filed a new patent specifically centered around enhancing your next trip through a tunnel.
The patent, which was published on October 23 and brought to broader attention by CarBuzz, envisions a system in which a car will automatically prepare itself to enhance the driver's experience in a tunnel. Using the vehicle’s onboard camera suite and other sensors, the car will detect and notify the driver of an upcoming entrance, at which point the fun begins.
Owners can choose between one of two modes, depending on their predilection for noise. The more enthusiastic among us would be able to hit a button, at which point the vehicle would lower its windows, open any sliding roof panels, activate Sport mode, and even drop a gear so revs are up ahead of your entry. If you have a convertible Porsche, the car will suggest pulling over ahead of the tunnel so that the car may drop the roof, as well as automatically adjust the climate control given the additional exposure. Once you exist the tunnel, the system would even return the car to its previous settings. Porsche will even offer a dedicated mode for its electric products, which brings more synthetic noise to the mix.
On the flip side, the Porsche should also offer owners the option to enhance their level of serenity while in tunnels. That version instead rolls up any open windows, closes the flaps in the exhaust, and uses the car’s stereo to cancel out any unpleasant frequencies brought on by the enclosed roadway. Seems slightly counterproductive in a Porsche, but we appreciate the brand taking this seriously from all sides.
As ever, a patent filing is never a guarantee of future products. That said, this is one that I think Porsche fans could get behind ... even if it isn’t too hard to crack the window and downshift on your own. Call me old-fashioned, I guess.
